see the title, right there in the middle beside the pink book.
ha!! what i loved, next to a pink book.
what a perfect combo for love thursday
and breast cancer awareness month.
the thing is, i don't always love a book. if i dare to put a book down before i finish, something i have really only felt comfortable doing in the last few years, i justify myself to death. i have always felt that it was a bit disrespectful to, as the kids would say, dis someone's labour of love. i imagine that writing a book has to be a huge labour of love.
this month i didn't finish my book club selection. the infidel. i didn't like it. i was sympathetic to the topic, to the author, i strongly believe that the issues facing this woman should be at the fore front of our political agenda, but i didn't like the book. i didn't like the way it was written, the detail, the style, we didn't click. and that's okay.
there are a million books out there for me to bond with. in fact the book i picked up last night, the book thief, grabbed me immediately. it is very poetic, i am sure tragic, although i have not read nearly enough to know, but i suspect. it is a holocaust book, which i tend to stay away from, but this one is drawing me in.
i looked at andy and said, mmm, page six of the preface and i am loving this book. it is a good fit for me. i thought about it often today, wishing i had time to sit down and read. the other book, and the two other half-read books sitting on my night stand, they don't call me during the day.
just like i don't have to love every man i meet, or every meal i eat, or every movie i see, i don't have to love every book i read.
it is okay to know what i love.
and what i don't.
happy love thursday everyone.

I couldn't agree more, Margie... Life is too short for books you don't bond with! I used to be so hung about book... I chose it, so gotta finish it, right? Nope, no more...LOL! If it's not for me, it goes back on the shelve, back to the library, etc. Here's to happy reading... and Happy Days :o) ((HUGS))

I love it when you're in my head, when the sister-synchro kicks in. I took a book from the library this week, "In the Kitchen" by M. Ali. I read 275 pages before I said to Barry, "I can't read this book, I am simply not enjoying it." And I put it down. I always read to the end. Perhaps it's part of the aging thing, life's too short and all that. Now I'm reading, "That Old Cape Magic" Richard Russo - it's meh, but I'll finish it.
I love you
xoxo

One of the greatest things about reading is that it's completely YOUR TIME. No reason to justify choosing to put down a book that's not worthy of it.
I've seen the woman who wrote Infidel on talk shows, and am always awed and impressed. Haven't picked up the book, but I think her story is fascinating.
Thanks for sharing!

I read for leisure what grabs me. Otherwise, I just read.
Enjoy life my friend.

I have been hearing great things about The Book Thief from all over the place. I need to pick it up. I just finished Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks and Blindspot by Jane Kamensky and Jill Lepore. I couldn't put either of them down! I hate to put down a book unless it is really, really awful. Usually I will compromise and skim the rest of the book so I at least catch the highlights.

Lately me too, putting down books with great justifications. It would seem a rather difficult task lately for me to finish a book. Perhaps I have an attention disorder?

love your bookshelf!!

You know what I'm thinking? I'm thinking your hubby is glad you don't love every man you meet. =D
As far as books, I even threw one away. You've no idea how hard that was, but liberating, too.

i cannot not finish a book. no matter how much i dislike it. it is a curse.
i did, however, like "the infidel".

I am catching up on my blog reading, Margie. I have missed being here daily.
I am always telling my students that if they aren't interested in the first 60 pages or so--they won't finish it. They might as well find another book. Of course, that doesn't work when I assign a novel, so I always feel like it is my job to help them get sucked into the book. And I can't teach a book that I don't love. How could I ever "sell" them on it??
I've missed you and your sis!
