the light - less

 

nothing quite beats the sunny face of a sunflower.

i took this photo last summer,

 my kitchen window at the lake.

  

standing tall and straight in three little vases.

the light is soft and dreamy.

ah, the sunlight.

today those flowers would look like this.

 

like an old vintage photo, the colour drained away over time.

i went to the doctor, i am low on vitamin d.

we laughed, let's line up all the canadians and test them!

there is no light here.  none.

when light is interrupted you have a shadow.

when there is no light, there is gray.

i am going to costa rica.  in four days. 

where the sun is shining.

after all, i am suffering from a lack of vitamin d.

and tonight.....

Just visiting ....

We arrived home late Sunday night, yesterday was spent curled up on the couch watching movies and today I headed back to work.   We had a rollicking good time.  Six different homes, six wonderful visits, six times the full bellies, six times the laughs.   I love hosting the holidays but this year it was fun to be just visiting which was a new experience for me.

First stop Montreal so I could meet this little guy for the first time and deliver his hat and sweater.   I was so happy I didn't have to mail it and was able to be there to grab a photo.

 

It was fun to see the familiar sites in Ottawa and do some artsy photography from the passenger seat of the car.

 

The only thing that would have made the trip better would have been time, more time to visit, to sit and stare out the window at this view while the wood stove warmed our backs.

 More time to sit at the table and chat with a boy while he ate a very chocolatey bun.

And like David,  I discovered that apparently I had received laundry for Christmas too, but it turned out that it was that regular old laundry that you find spilling out of suitcases when you arrive home!  

That sweet comment is going into the family lexicon.  

"What did you get?"  "Laundry". 

Priceless.

Olympic Macro Monday

I didn't think I would be excited.

 

I wasn't as excited as the torch bearer who was waiting anxiously.

  But then the officials came along and our runner received his instructions.

 
And I got excited 

 

But not as excited as I am about our road trip which starts this morning, 

bright and early at 6:00 a.m.   

First stop Montreal!

we are living with one of the kids right now, biding our time until our condo is ready. there is no backyard in this townhouse condo for charley to play in.  the good news, there is a park 150 feet from the house.

four or five times a day someone walks charley. it is a winter wonderland with a path circling the entire park, there is even a duck pond. 

 

such a beautiful thing, a walk in the park.

Remembering

As we sat in a church last evening, wrapped in our winter coats, sitting shoulder to shoulder with friends gathered to remember a wonderful woman who was taken to soon from the arms of her family by breast cancer, I listened to a man with the voice of an angel sing a very old hymn, In the Bleak Midwinter.   Tomorrow morning we will find ourselves in a different church at a funeral for a friend's mother.

 

The hymn ends with the words, "I have nothing to give but my heart".  It was a solemn reminder that we are blessed to be embarking on a journey where we get to spend time with family and friends this week.

capturing a princess

i take my camera with me. i would often stop and think "should i bring my camera?" and after umpteen lost moments i have realized that i should not even ask myself that question. the camera comes even if it means getting out of the car and going back in the house to get it. 

if i leave without my camera i am left without it and that's never a good thing.

taking random photos of people in public places doesn't always work for me.  i am shy, perhaps even intimidated by the privacy of others, afraid that i am intruding. this little girl was at the grocery store. she was quite animated, standing on a stool pretending to talk on a pay phone. i know that i had been smiling at her, camera in hand and just like that her dad motioned to me to take her photo. i was unprepared and i threw my camera onto the automatic setting, afraid that i would miss the moment fiddling with exposure and the like.  

i captured a princess.  

so what is important in this photography journey i am on.

 is it the moment? the technique? the skill?  

or is it the princess?
