halifax

i went to halifax, nova scotia this weekend with a friend, two of her kids and two of my kids.  we moved the two youngest boys into residence at dalhousie university.  it was a whirlwind weekend full of an exhausting amount of shopping, packing, unpacking, eating, drinking, laughing and goodbyes.  

in 1917 the halifax harbour was destroyed when a warship carrying ammunition exploded, leaving thousands dead or injured. it has quite a history and has been beautifully restored. i was pleased for my boys that they were able to visit pier 21 and see the actual record of their great grandfather and grandfather's arrival in this great country on march 4, 1927.  their great grandfather's occupation was listed as baker; my middle son works in the family bakery, that very same bakery that his great grandfather established. 

it was a milestone moment for our family as the youngest sibling begins the next stage of his life in a city far away from home, a city full of laid back people who love to sit in pubs, drink the beer brewed just down the street, and sing and stomp their feet to live maritime music.

i was in awe of the waiters who could carry a tray of beer like this.

a. took this photo on a paris street a few months ago.  funny that kath should have brought this topic to the table because a. and i were off to paris in december, he had a meeting scheduled and i was tagging along on points.  yesterday he called from the office to say the meeting had been moved to january, in mexico.  now i like mexico, been there a couple of times, but........paris......come on people.  the internet and i had the whole trip planned.  i was so ready.

i would love to go back to israel, walk down the narrow streets of the old city in jerusalem, so much to see, so much history, a truly magical place. 

but if i could pick anywhere, i think i would want to go to morocco.  i was there many many years ago but lately i find my mind drifting over there.  i will stay here at the peacock pavilion and i will make friends with maryam.  i will go to the medina and take pictures like this.

meanwhile speaking of traveling, i ran to jamaica the other day, met christina over at soul aperture and she sent me to see paris parfait.   tara has beautiful beautiful paris photos, just in case the soeurs du jour never get there.

Paris, I mean, Paris, France not Paris, Ontario

I want to go back in time a little bit, you might have noticed that this blog's URL starts with "3yrplan".   I had been writing in a blog that was really, for my sister and me.  For Margie, since she was the only person reading it and for me, because last September I realized that I was three years away from turning 50.  I thought it might be a good thing to get a wee jump on it and  watch my life happening while I approached the half century.  That blog has morphed into our joint venture here, the souers du jour.

When I started 3yrplan part of the plan was to get fit, slim, have great hair and learn new things. Things have motored along and, no, I'm no fitter or slimmer, I always had great hair - that one was easy - I'm learning photography, which as it turns out is harder than I thought, but I'm loving it.  My life is unfolding as it should.

But!  I am a year older. 3 years have turned to 2 years.

One of the things BB & I  talked about last year was a trip. A big vacation to celebrate. I chose Paris.   I wanted to go to Paris to celebrate the Big Birthday.

Today, I was talking to a colleague who had spent his honeymoon in Paris.  I spoke of my desire to travel there for my birthday.  He said, knowingly, "I hope you specified Paris, France."  I laughed, because we have a delightful little town here in Ontario also called Paris.   It would have been a great afternoon outing, but I would have been sorely disappointed.

Tonight I made the specifics clear.  "Hey, you know I meant France, right?" 

So we've been talking all evening, about where would we go and more specifically what "this" would we sacrifice to get "that".   We are going to have to plan hard.  BB's schedule means a trip in November.   Two weeks.  We have to budget and save so that we can have a trip that would make us feel rich, even if just for the short time.  A holiday, not a vacation.

We decided that we're not completely married to the idea of France, we're flexible, but, yes, again with the buts, BUT ...

we don't want to go somewhere and end up in a place like this,

maybe this would be okay, because,
 after all it has "ree contl bkf" along with the much desired free shuttle
(begging the question of course,  to where?)

 

this one sounds romantic, I don't know about you, but the first thing I think of when I pull into my vacation destination is a used car

 

wait, this might be better!  after all it is a three star motel,

 

I think, though, I really might prefer

 

In all seriousness, where would you go?  What would you do?

I've been from one end of Canada to the other.  I've been to the Caribbean
and through some of the States, but I've never been anywhere else.

Give me some ideas!
